Bhutan itineraries typically cover Thimphu, the capital; Paro, home to the cliffside Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), one of Bhutan's most recognisable sites; and often Punakha, known for its dzong (fortress-monastery) at the confluence of two rivers. Bhutan controls tourist numbers and requires visitors to book through a licensed operator with a government-set daily tariff, so trips here are typically pre-arranged rather than independently planned.
March–May brings spring blooms including rhododendrons. September–November offers clear autumn skies, often considered the best season for mountain views and festivals. June–August is the monsoon, and December–February is cold with possible snow at higher elevations like Paro.

Paro International Airport is Bhutan's only international airport, served by a small number of airlines with flights typically routed via Indian cities like Delhi, Kolkata or Guwahati. Entry by road from India is also possible via towns like Phuentsholing.
