This region combines Darjeeling in West Bengal — known for its tea gardens, colonial-era toy train and views toward Kangchenjunga — with neighbouring Sikkim, covering Gangtok, the capital, with its monasteries and cable car; Pelling, known for closer Kangchenjunga views; and the more remote Lachen and Lachung valleys, gateways to high-altitude lakes like Gurudongmar and valleys like Yumthang. These are commonly sold together as one eastern Himalaya circuit given their proximity.
March–May brings spring blooms including rhododendrons in Sikkim's valleys. October–December offers the clearest mountain views. June–September is monsoon season with a landslide risk on hill roads, and higher-altitude areas like Lachen-Lachung can see snow and road closures in deep winter.
A Darjeeling-Gangtok short break works in 4–5 nights. The longer circuits below, extending to Pelling, Lachen, Lachung and Kalimpong, run 7–9 nights for a fuller eastern Himalaya tour.
Bagdogra Airport near Siliguri is the main gateway for the whole region, with Darjeeling roughly 3 hours by road and Gangtok around 4–5 hours. Sikkim's own Pakyong Airport near Gangtok also has limited flight connectivity.
