Best Time to Visit Kashmir

Kashmir is one of the few places in India where a single trip can cover snow-capped peaks, a Mughal garden, a houseboat stay on a lake, and a cable-car ride above the tree line. Timing it well makes a real difference to what you'll actually see and do.

The Four Seasons, Briefly

March–May brings tulip blooms in Srinagar and generally mild weather — this is the most popular window for honeymooners. June–August is noticeably cooler than most of the rest of India during peak summer, which is why it's busy with domestic tourists escaping the heat. September–October offers some of the clearest mountain views of the year, along with the chinar trees turning golden and red. December–February is snow season in Gulmarg and Pahalgam — popular for snow activities, though some higher-altitude roads can be affected by weather, so it's worth checking current conditions before a winter trip.

Picking Your Base Towns

Most Kashmir itineraries are built around some combination of four towns: Srinagar, on the shore of Dal Lake, known for houseboat stays and Mughal gardens; Gulmarg, a hill station and ski resort with the Gondola cable car; Pahalgam, a river valley that's a good base for Betaab Valley and Aru Valley; and Sonmarg, the gateway to the Thajiwas Glacier.

How Long to Plan For

A first-time trip is comfortable at 5–6 nights, which is enough time for Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam without rushed transfers between towns. If you're short on time, a 3-night trip focusing on just Srinagar and one hill town still works well. On the other end, longer 8–9 night itineraries typically add Sonmarg and sometimes combine Kashmir with a Vaishno Devi darshan via Katra.
