Leh-Ladakh sits in a high-altitude Himalayan desert, known for stark mountain landscapes, Buddhist monasteries (gompas) like Thiksey and Hemis, and dramatic high-altitude lakes and valleys. Pangong Lake, known for its shifting shades of blue, and Nubra Valley, reached over the Khardung La pass and known for its sand dunes and double-humped Bactrian camels, are the two most common add-ons to a Leh city stay.
May–September is the main travel season, when the Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways are open and most passes are accessible. October–April sees the region largely cut off by road (though Leh remains reachable by air), with extreme cold.
A short Leh-only trip works in 3–4 nights, including a mandatory acclimatisation day given the altitude. Adding Pangong Lake and Nubra Valley for a fuller circuit typically needs 5–6 nights.
Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh has direct flights from Delhi and other major Indian cities. Overland routes via the Manali-Leh or Srinagar-Leh highways are only open in the May–September window and involve a multi-day drive.
