Jaisalmer is known as Rajasthan's Golden City, built around Jaisalmer Fort — one of the few 'living forts' in the world, still inhabited within its walls — along with intricately carved havelis and the Sam sand dunes nearby, the base for camel safaris and desert-camp stays. October–March is the only realistic window for most travellers — cool enough for desert excursions and camel safaris. April–June turns extremely hot in the Thar Desert and is generally avoided.
